Whanau Whakamana /Workman
I
have worked in the Health Service since 1952 in hospitals and communities in
NZ and Australia, including as Principal Nurse at Masterton Hospital and
Taranaki Hospital in the 70s and 80s, and managing Community Health
Services in MidCental in the 90s.
I
was also Head of Department Maori Studies Masterton Community Polytech for 3
years, before establishing Whaiora Whanui as a Maori provider unit in 2007.
Since 2007 I have held a senior postdoctoral research post Pumanawa Hauora /
department of Maori Health research and Development at Massey University.
I
have previously served on the DHB 1997 – 2005 and has chaired Te Iwi Kainga
2005 - 2008
I
received the new Zealand Order of Merit in 2000 and in 2010 received the
NZNO Akenei Hei Award for participation in Hauora Maori. Whanau health has a
high priority for me.
I
am a registered nurse and am now in my fourth term with the Board. I am part
of the winning team that provides the vision and the environment for health
innovation, fiscal prudence and service success. Continued improvement and
enhancing services to meet community health needs is the current and future
focus.
My nursing
career spanning almost 23 years in the Wairarapa community gives me a solid
knowledge base of current and projected health trends. I have worked in a
Masterton aged care facility, a Featherston general practice, and was the
Plunket Nurse for Carterton and Greytown. I was strongly involved in the
establishment of the Wairarapa Community PHO. I am self-employed and
I live in rural Carterton with husband Jim—we have 5 adult children.
A
registered nurse for 20 years, working in Wairarapa primary health care for
the past nine. I grew up South Wairarapa, was educated in Masterton and have
worked in Wairarapa and Auckland Hospitals.
My
work is driven by the desire to achieve positive health outcomes -
empowering people to understand their health issues and allowing them to
access services appropriate to their needs.
This ground-level view gives me real insight into the health challenges
facing everyday people.
I
have three young children. Children are our future - the health of children
and families needs a supportive voice.
Gaining experience in governance with three years on the Wairarapa Community
Primary Health Organisation Board, I continue to develop my passion for
helping people and improving health services.
I
am committed to the vision Well Wairarapa - better health for all: Wairarapa
ora - hauora pai mo te katoa.
This
is my fourth term as a
member of
the Wairarapa DHB. I am also currently the South Wairarapa District Council
Deputy Mayor. I believe the both roles complement and enhance each other. I
bring a rural community perspective to each role. The Wairarapa has seen
some amazingly positive changes to the health service in six years. I enjoy
being be a member of an outstanding DHB.
The new hospital has been the catalyst for the changes enabling us to start
implementing services and programmes that can really change the lives of all
Wairarapa people. People will always get sick but children, the elderly and
Maori are still going to hospital too often. Services working together will
ensure Wairarapa people are healthier and safer.
I
know I have the experience, commitment, time, determination and enthusiasm
to enable this to happen.
I
trained at Masterton Hospital and have lived in both urban and rural areas
in the Wairarapa. My experience in nursing and patient advocacy makes me an
ideal representative for the community. I believe I have a realistic and
practical understanding of the delivery of Health Care we should expect in
the Wairarapa, and feel well equipped to represent the community's health
needs on the DH Board.
A
particular interest is elderly care, having worked in residential care. My
experience involved coronary care, intensive care, special care baby unit
and family planning.
I
am Nurse Manager for Masterton Medical, a member of the Primary Health Care
Nursing Advisory Committee and on the Chronic Disease Steering Group.
Helen has trained as an auditor for the Royal College of General
Practitioners which has given her the vehicle to experience first hand what
other District Health Boards are doing nationally.
I
own and operate, with my eldest son, a signwriting and graphic art company
in Masterton.
1 spent 38 years on the Masterton
Licensing Trust (Trust House) 29 of those as chairman. I also served one
term on the Masterton District Council and then 9 years on the Greater
Wellington Regional and was the chairman of the Wairarapa and Rural Services
Committee during that time.
I am chairman of the Wairarapa
Community Transport Services Inc. a voluntary organisation I helped set up
to provide a free transportation to the Masterton Hospital, Masterton
Medical Centre and hospitals in Wellington, for Wairarapa citizens, unable
to otherwise access these facilities. I am also
chairman of the Tolley Educational Trust.
I am
married with three sons and a daughter; my youngest son is a volunteer
ambulance officer and is currently training to be a paramedic.
I
recently retired from General Surgery, having worked in Masterton since
1978. During my time in the Wairarapa I have variously been on the local
Cancer Society committee, Chairman of Glenwood Private Hospital, and
committee member and trustee of Selina Sutherland Hospital.
Presently I am the founding Chairman of Trails Wairarapa Trust, set up to
promote multipurpose trails and safe cycling in the Wairarapa, and am on the
committee of the Wairarapa Community Health Trust. Before my retirement, my
wife Margaret and I established an olive grove of over 1000 trees on the
outskirts of Masterton, I also enjoy fly fishing and golf, given time.
We
have 3 adult children and 5 grandchildren, one son is presently training as
a Gastroenterologist.
I
have been very involved with the provision of healthcare all my working
life, primarily at the coalface. It is now a privilege to serve on our local
District Health Board with the opportunity to influence decisions needed to
maintain our high standards of healthcare, and to improve the health of the
Wairarapa as a whole. I expect my experience in the medical scene, and
knowledge of the workforce, to be of good value to the Board and the
community it serves.
I am
a general practitioner, having lived and worked in Masterton since 1973. I
am also Medical Advisor to Post Polio Support Society NZ (Inc) and President
of the Wairarapa Branch.

past three terms, and have been appointed to the Hospital and Disability
Committees.
I
have been a member of Wairarapa College Board of Trustees for seven years,
and am currently studying for a post-graduate diploma. I am married, with
two adult sons, and am a member of Rotary. My interests include languages,
the arts and stitching.
I
have worked diligently during my terms on the Wairarapa District Health
Board, and enjoy serving my community in this way.
