Mental Health

Wairarapa DHB began implementing the new Adult Mental Health Strategy for the district in 2004, following an extensive review and consultation process.

The focus is on recovery and hope, responsiveness to Maori, and improved coordination and partnership.

The range of services in the Wairarapa has been re-shaped to align with this strategy. Services are now funded in new ways, to deliver a better and more accessible range.

At any time, there are around 540 people in the Wairarapa receiving DHB-funded mental health support from a range of providers.

The majority of DHB mental health services are community focused, with teams designed to support people both in crisis and on a long-term basis. Another team is focused on child and adolescent mental health. There is a Crisis Respite Unit at the Wairarapa Hospital.

Improved coordination between DHB and other providers is seen as a key driver in supporting the mental health of our population.
