The Ministry of Health and the Unite Against Covid website are the go-to sites for the latest official information and guidance for life at Red. The Ministry of Health currently posts a daily update on the home page of their website between 1 & 2pm daily.
The three most important things to focus on right now are vaccination/boosters, mask wearing and making a plan to ensure you’re prepared to self-isolate at home if you or a member of your household gets sick.
Omicron is highly infectious. Each person with Omicron has the potential to infect 10-12 other people, which is why it’s so important to stay home if you’re sick – and get tested if you have any symptoms of COVID-19. Latest reports suggest that a sore throat is one of the earliest and most common indicators of COVID-19. All the symptoms of COVID-19 are here.

Testing for Covid-19
Testing is available 7 days a week and anyone with symptoms or that has been to a location of interest, or has been advised to test must do so. In Wairarapa, Testing is available at medical practices. Opening times and information is HERE.
Vaccination - including Boosters
Every person aged 5 years and over can vaccinate. Two vaccination doses are needed, with a booster shot four months after the second dose.
If it’s four or more months since you had your second dose, please prioritise getting a booster as soon as possible. Boosters provide a significantly higher level of protection than two doses alone. People aged over 60 who have had their booster are around 45 times less likely to be hospitalised than an unvaccinated person of the same age.

If you don’t already have a plan regarding how you and the people in your household will manage self-isolation at home, now’s the time to korero! Please take the time now to prepare yourselves and others for catching COVID-19.
Make a plan for what you will do if you or someone in your household tests positive. Connect with whanau, friends and neighbours to build a support network for each other. Make sure you have what you need at home in the event you need to isolate for 14 days or more.
If one person in your household gets Omicron, you will all need to isolate. There is no need to panic buy, but now’s the time to ensure your medicine cabinet has the basics, and the freezer, pantry and laundry are all well stocked with supplies.
- Wear a face covering wherever you go. These are mandatory on flights, public transport, taxis, retail, and public venues.
- With a My Vaccine Pass, you can visit cafes and bars, attend gatherings and events, and visit close contact businesses like hairdressers. Some limits like capacity and distancing requirements will apply.
- Without My Vaccine Pass, there are more restrictions in place. For example, you can't visit close contact businesses like hairdressers or gyms, attend events like concerts, or dine in at cafes and restaurants.
- Workplaces and schools are open — public health measures will be in place
- Keep scanning QR codes and recordkeeping wherever you go
- Keep physically distanced wherever possible
- If you have cold or flu symptoms, isolate immediately and call Healthline for advice about a test

We all have a role to play if we are to be well, stay well, and protect our region from Covid-19. We all know what to do:
1. stay home if you’re unwell and get tested - Call Healthline if you have symptoms 0800 358 5453
2. sign into places using the NZ COVID Tracer app and enable Bluetooth to keep track of where you have been
3. practice good hygiene (includes washing your hands well and often, and coughing into your elbow)
4. regularly clean high touch surfaces
5. wear your mask in public places
6. get vaccinated - vaccination is available to anyone over 12 years old.
