This afternoon there was an incident at South End School, resulting in some children being exposed to an unknown substance with "the smell of rotten eggs."

Emergency services responded quickly and 10 children with symptoms of nausea and vomiting, streaming eyes and raised temperatures were taken by ambulance to the Emergency Department at Wairarapa Hospital. As a precautionary measure the remaining children and teachers were kept at the school and most went through a decontamination process.

The children taken to the ED were soon discharged. No patients were admitted.

Once they went home, all the children involved were advised to have a warm shower, and to wash their clothing thoroughly.

Anyone concerned about symptoms they are experiencing should call Healthline on 0800 611 116

As always, if you are acutely unwell and need immediate care, call 111 or go to your Emergency Department.

Update: No one presented to ED overnight with any symptoms relating to the Carterton incident.
