Staff were invited to enter the competition mid September and pay $5, which gave them a bucket and two seeded potatoes to plant and grow for judging date in December.
Unfortunately the weather was not the best for judging day, however approx. 50 people turned up with buckets of potatoes to empty on to a tarpaulin outside the hospital café.
The Categories were:
Biggest potato, smallest potato, most potatoes grown and heaviest potato.
There appeared to be a variety of methods to grow the spuds, some of the buckets had very elaborate set ups. There were some very interesting shapes and sizes!
It was loads of fun! There were families with kids involved on the day, some amazing spot prizes and a sausage sizzle for all to enjoy.
Brent Gare from MediaWorks Radio was one of the judges. There was a lot of laughter and supportive cheering. The atmosphere was competitive with cries of "you missed one" if an entrant felt one of their potatoes was lost in the soil.
Almost 80 buckets were sold! This event created a great fundraiser for Acute Services and Paediatrics.
A huge thank you to Hanna and Sam in Acute Services, and Jenny Burt who were the main organisers of this great event, and to our community sponsors who donated wonderful prizes:
