It's good to know your neighbours and have a contact number for them if you need someone to check on your property or feed your cat if you can't get home. But in an emergency, the people you live nearest to can suddenly become your most immediate source of support.

March 2019 marks the tenth anniversary of Neighbours Day.

Why not take the opportunity to get to know your neighbours?

Take some steps to be more prepared:

  • exchange contact details in case of emergency
  • have a quick conversation about how you could help each other out in an emergency, such as checking on each other or sharing resources like a gas BBQ.
  • know who on your street might need extra assistance.

You can attend a Wellington Region Emergency Management Event to get to know your neighbours and practice how you and your community can respond to an emergency.
