What is a District Health Board?
District health boards are hospital and health organisations responsible for deciding on the mix, level and quality of health and disability services to be publicly funded in each of the 21 district health board catchments throughout New Zealand.
District health boards enter into agreements with providers for the delivery of those services, including agreements with the public hospitals in their regions. District health boards are also responsible for funding the delivery of health services by providers such as GPs, Maori and Pacific groups, pharmacies, laboratories, dental services and mental health providers, and resthomes, as well as hospital and community services.
What is the catchment for the Wairarapa DHB?
It covers the same boundaries as the Wairarapa District Council—from Cape Palliser to Mount Bruce, and the Rimutaka and Tararua ranges to the Coast.

There were approximately 39,000 people living in the Wairarapa DHB catchment area at the time of the 2001 census. In addition, the DHB caters for the considerable number of weekend commuters.
