Refreshments: Kai

There is a hospital cafe is available for staff and visitors.

It is open:

  • Monday to Friday—6.30am to 3.00pm, then from 5.45pm to 6.45pm for evening meals.
  • Saturday and Sundays—7.00am to 1.00pm, then again from 5.45pm to 6.45pm.

Tea and coffee is available in the cafe 24 hours a day.

There are three dairys and a service station close to the hospital. Refreshments, magazines etc. can also be purchased there.

Accommodation: Whare noho

A list of local accommodation facilities is available from the Enquiries desk in the main foyer of the hospital. Many of them offer discounts to the friends or relatives of hospital patients.

Whanau on-site accommodation

An on-site whanau house provides accommodation at the hospital for family/whanau who live out of town or have a critically ill relative at the hospital. Families/whanau can speak with a nurse in the ward or contact the hospital coordinator through the hospital telephonist at any time to make arrangements or for further information.

Parking: Tunga motoka

There is ample free parking available close to the hospital. However, only mobility card holders may use the disabled carparks. Please also respect the 'staff only' parking areas.

The speed limit is 30 kmph maximum in the hospital grounds.

Taxi & bus services: Nga waka kawe tangata

There is a payphone located at the main entrance of the hospital. If phoning a taxi, ask to be collected from the main hospital entrance. There are two taxi services in Masterton:

  • Masterton Radio Taxis—378 2555
  • Mobility Services—377 4231

There is a bus service four times a day to the hospital on Tuesday and Friday. The bus stop is located next to the main entrance. The team at the enquiry desk will have bus timetables for you, or you can request a timetable from Tranzit Coachlines on (06) 377 1227.

Please note that you are responsible for your own transport home, regardless of how you arrived at the hospital. If you have had an anaesthetic you must not drive for 24 hours.

Interpreters: Kaiwhakahuri reo

It is important that you can understand what is happening. Your family and friends may be able to help. However, if you need an interpreter, ask your nurse for this to be arranged.

Spiritual care: Wairuatanga

If during your admission you require comfort, prayer, communion, anointing, confidential sharing or family support, please ask a staff member to arrange it for you. You can elect to be visited by your church representative on your admission form.

Kia karakia/kaumatua are also available to provide support to patients and their whanau. Simply contact the Maori Health Coordinator.

There is an inter-denominational chapel open 24 hours a day for patients, visitors and staff to use for quiet times, reflection or prayer. An inter-denominational service is held at 3pm on the first Wednesday of every month, to which everyone is welcome.

Maori Health Unit: Tari Hauora Maori

There is a small support team for all ethnic groups but specifically for Maori to assist in recovery. Please ask your nurse for information.

Telephone use for patients: Waea mo nga turoro

Cell phones may be used in hospital, but not within 1 metre of any monitoring equipment. There are coin phones in certain areas for your use for local calls only. For toll calls, please ask your nurse. There is a public telephone located near the front entrance.

Equipment loan: Taonga tuku

There is a wide variety of equipment and mobility aids that may be available for loan, to help you manage at home. You may be asked for a deposit against the return of the equipment.

Returning loan equipment promptly is a positive way you can support your hospital and community—the equipment is then available for others, and the cost of replacement is avoided. Thank you for your cooperation.

Hospital pharmacy: Rongoa o te hohipera

The Hospital pharmacy provides hospital-only prescriptions. The health professional caring for you will direct you there as necessary.
