The Māori Health Service focuses on improving the responsiveness of Wairarapa District Health Board services to the needs of Māori.The culture and philosophy of the service is to provide services to Māori.

The Service is about:

  • Responding appropriately to your needs as a patient in this hospital
  • Advocacy -talking with Doctors and Clinical staff on your behalf
  • Tikanga - to work with your caregivers in the wards to ensure that your Tinorangatiratanga and dignity is maintained
  • Whakahono - to link you with community Māori health providers for continued care following your discharge
  • Whānau- to provide support for your whānau while they are assisting with your care
  • Transfer - if you are transferred to another hospital for specialised care we can arrange accommodation for your whānau
  • Retention - If it is your wish to retain specimens or body parts, following surgery, we will assist you with advice and lead you through the process

Kaitātaki Whānau Ora Facilitator

The Kaitātaki Whānau Ora is available to:

  • support all Māori who need to access the Wairarapa Hospital Services as an inpatient or outpatient
  • offer support and assistance
  • visit the wards on a regular basis and can stop in for a kōrero (chat)
  • assist you in keeping your outpatient appointments and will follow up on those that do not attend
  • liaise with other health providers on your behalf if requested
  • offer karakia and Māori cultural support
  • support your discharge planning
  • assist in arranging whānau hui
    with your care team and other
    health care providers if requested
  • refer you to Māori Health
    Provider/s for ongoing support if
    requested.
Hours of Service

Monday to Friday from 8.00am to 4.30pm.

Accommodation

Accommodation is available for all people from out of town. Please ask staff to provide you with a Taku Wāhi – My Place pamphlet and support accessing accommodation for your whānau/family members/or support people.

If ongoing care is required following discharge from hospital ask the Kaitātaki Whānau Ora or nurse to contact the Māori Health Provider of your choice and ask for them to be present when discussing your discharge plan.
